SeaTrees have developed a scheme to generate Marine Biodiversity Credits (called ‘Biodiversity Blocks) across three marine ecosystems: mangrove forests, coral reefs and kelp forests.
Each “block” represents a defined unit of action taken in a SeaTrees ecosystem project, such as: mangrove tree planted, square-foot of kelp forest restored, square-meter of coral reef protected. They are stewardship credits: they represent the unit of work done to restore biodiversity. Each block creates “biodiversity uplift” outcomes. Uplift is measured using science-based protocols common in marine ecology. Blocks are issued and retired using a blockchain registry system (the Regen Network). Reports, data, and media are also posted on-chain for full transparency.
The primary goal of the scheme is to enable small-scale, locally-led projects to operate with minimal investment while incorporating the latest science in marine biodiversity.
