Nature Repair Act (2023)

The Nature Repair Market is Australia’s national, legislated biodiversity market. It is designed to deliver high-integrity biodiversity outcomes and increase investment in nature.

Project proponents select a method to design and carry out a project. Proponents can earn a biodiversity certificate once a project’s biodiversity outcome threshold has been achieved. Investors can partner with proponents to help with up-front project costs. They can also buy biodiversity certificates.

Key features to ensure market integrity and transparency include:

Monitoring, reporting and compliance requirements overseen by the Clean Energy Regulator.

Ecological Knowledge System (EKS) –The EKS makes it easier for market participants to access the ecological information needed to assess the benefits of nature repair projects for biodiversity.

Biodiversity Assessment Instrument (BAI) – The BAI sets how methods must describe biodiversity. It is the foundation for measuring biodiversity and improvements.

The Nature Repair Act 2023 establishes the Nature Repair Market framework and legislates rules to support transparency and integrity and to foster collaborative efforts to address environmental decline. It acknowledges First Nations people and enables the use of Indigenous knowledge guided by the owners of that knowledge.
