Investing in Nature: A Company Decision-Making Framework

Understanding a prospective partner’s decision process can help communities prepare for more informed conversations. This framework introduces the motivations that can lead companies to invest in nature, including operational risks, resilience, stakeholder expectations, environmental and social outcomes, and alignment with business priorities.

It then explores questions about strategic fit, location, partnerships, inclusion, scale and financial value. Examples from Austral Fisheries, BHP, Blackmores, Brambles and Qantas illustrate how these considerations can shape different approaches.

Communities, practitioners and company teams can use the resource to explore potential alignment and identify questions to discuss together. The company examples reflect the context in which the framework was prepared; the framework supports understanding of corporate decision-making rather than establishing whether a particular partnership is appropriate for a community.
